Yale’s Sonnenfeld & Tian: The Starlink Affair and the Price of Obedience
Yale’s Jeffrey Sonnenfeld and Steven Tian argue in TIME and CNBC that the Starlink row exposes a deeper truth: the world’s richest man still answers to Washington — and every Starlink customer now carries a new business risk.

NEW HAVEN, CT (USIntelNews.com) –
Bottom line
In two essays published on 22 October, Professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld and Steven Tian of the Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute argue that the restriction of Ukraine’s military-grade Starlink access exposes a deeper reality: Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, still answers to Washington. Neither essay casts him as the master of events.
Key judgements
Power runs one way. Roughly a fifth of SpaceX’s revenue comes from federal agencies; its satellites need federal licences, and any Tesla–SpaceX merger would need federal approval. The authors judge that Musk’s business interests leave him little room to defy the White House.
Ambiguity as strategy. As the White House and Musk blamed each other, the authors argue, the haze gave both sides deniability while the pressure on Kyiv grew.
A dangerous bargain. In TIME, the authors compare the episode with the pact Moscow offered its oligarchs in 2000: keep your wealth, surrender your political independence. They stress that America has not become Russia, but ask whether political obedience is becoming the price of commercial success.
The business risk. In CNBC, they warn that every Starlink customer must now treat throttled service as a contractual risk. Rivals such as Blue Origin need not win on technology, they write — only on certainty.
Outlook
The authors expect customers, from foreign governments to airlines, to spread their risk away from a single, unpredictable provider. On their reading, Musk’s real reckoning may come from his own market rather than from Washington.
Jeffrey Sonnenfeld is Senior Associate Dean for Leadership Studies and Lester Crown Professor in Management Practice at the Yale School of Management. Steven Tian is Research Director of the Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute.
