International Outcry as Russian FSB Detains U.S. Journalist Evan Gershkovich
LANGLEY (USIntelNews.com) –
During the Soviet era, the KGB employed a diverse array of techniques to control and manipulate both its own citizens and foreign governments. Among the most notorious tactics employed were surveillance and wiretapping, which involved an extensive network of informants and spies that monitored the activities and conversations of ordinary citizens, dissidents, and foreign diplomats. Other techniques included disinformation campaigns that spread false information to influence public opinion, blackmailing individuals with compromising information obtained through surveillance or other means, carrying out assassinations of dissidents and defectors both within and outside the Soviet Union, and psychological warfare that manipulated and intimidated individuals.
Today, the FSB continues to employ these methods as part of its efforts to maintain strict control over Russian citizens, suppress dissent, and expand Russian influence while undermining foreign governments. According to state-run media outlet RIA Novosti, the FSB recently announced that it had detained Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter who was on assignment in the city of Yekaterinburg. Gershkovich, a U.S. citizen, was reportedly collecting “secret information” about a Russian defense company, resulting in a criminal case being opened against him on charges of espionage. While previous local media reports suggested that Gershkovich was in Yekaterinburg to cover Russia’s war in Ukraine and the Wagner mercenary group, many foreign journalists have continued to work in the country despite the majority of independent journalists fleeing last year due to draconian censorship laws.
It is imperative that Evan Gershkovich is released immediately.
