Clapper: Firing Comey, Hiring Whitaker Could Be ‘Slow-Motion Saturday Night Massacre’

Thursday on CNN’s “The Situation Room,” former National Intelligence Director James Clapper, also a CNN contributor, said beginning with the firing of former FBI Director James Comey and all the way up to the potential actions of newly appointed acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, President Donald Trump has engaged in a “slow-motion Saturday Night Massacre.” Clapper said, “I’m saying this as a layman, not as an attorney, but as I understand the recusal rules at the Department of Justice, if there’s even the appearance of potential conflict you’re supposed to recuse yourself, which is what Jeff Sessions while attorney general did, which I think was completely appropriate. And given what he has, Mr. Whitaker has said and written about the Mueller investigation, I think there’s clearly a conflict.” He continued, “My own theory here is what I think the reason for installing Mr. Whitaker as acting attorney general, the legality of that aside, is to gain access to what evidence Mueller actually has. Because I think that’s one thing that really bothers the president. It would appear to me to be ignorant about what the evidence that Mueller may have against him.” He added, “I’ve been concerned about the assault (More)

Pelosi: Trump Fired Sessions 'to Interfere With Mueller' and 'Distract From' Losing House

During an interview aired on Thursday’s edition of CNN’s “Cuomo Primetime,” House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said President Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions and replaced him with Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker to interfere with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation and the move was timed to distract from Democrats winning the House. Anchor Chris Cuomo asked, “It was no surprise that the president of the United States would try to distract from the big win for your party in the House. But when that came in the form of a big move, of firing Jeff Sessions, and putting in, as Acting AG, Mr. Whitaker, do you see this as a move, not just to distract from politics, but to interfere with the Mueller probe?” Pelosi responded, “I think the latter is the primary purpose, is to interfere with Mueller. … The timing of it is, of course, to distract from the big defeat that the president suffered in terms of our taking the House.” Follow Ian Hanchett on Twitter @IanHanchett (More)

Pelosi: Bipartisan Background Check Legislation 'Will Be a Priority'

During an interview aired on Thursday’s edition of CNN’s “Cuomo Primetime,” House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) stated that bringing up bipartisan legislation on background checks “will be a priority for us in the next Congress.” Pelosi stated, “First, let me join you in expressing sorrow over this mass shooting and the loss of the sheriff and every other life that was lost there. I do believe — because in the — in this Congress, the one that we’re in right this minute, there is bipartisan legislation to have commonsense background checks to prevent guns going into the wrong hands. Now, it doesn’t cover everything, but it is — it will save many lives.” She added, “[T]his will be a priority for us in the next Congress.” Follow Ian Hanchett on Twitter @IanHanchett (More)

Tom Steyer Urges Democrats to Impeach Trump in New York Times Op-ed

Billionaire left-wing mega-donor Tom Steyer is urging Democrats to use their new majority in the House of Representatives to impeach president Donald Trump. Steyer spent over $100 million and employed over 1,000 people to make the case for impeachment throughout the 2018 midterm elections. Now, he argues in a New York Times op-ed printed November 8, newly-elected Democrats must live up to their end of the bargain: As President Trump continues to accelerate his lawlessness, the new Democratic House majority must initiate impeachment proceedings against him as soon as it takes office in January. For nearly two years, Mr. Trump has publicly flouted his oath of office. He has turned the presidency into a moneymaking enterprise for a family business he refuses to divest from, in direct violation of any plain reading of the Constitution. He is all but an unindicted co-conspirator in two federal felony cases. He has created an atmosphere of criminality through his hateful, violent rhetoric against political opponents, journalists and private citizens alike. Most egregiously, he has a longstanding pattern of obstructing justice. On Wednesday, he continued this by firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions and installing Matthew Whitaker — who has publicly called for curtailing the special (More)

Tucker Carlson Responds to Antifa Threats — 'Our Public Conversation Has Been Hijacked by Extremists'

Thursday on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” host Tucker Carlson called into his own show, which was being guest hosted by “Fox & Friends” co-host Brian Kilmeade, to address Antifa’s so-called “protest” outside his home earlier this week. Carlson called it “upsetting” that his wife had to hide out of fear of the people threatening violence outside his home under the guise of a “protest.” “What’s it like to find out that your wife is hiding in the pantry because people are threatening her? I mean, it’s upsetting,” he said. Carlson insisted he wasn’t going to back down from his role as a media commentator given these antics. “This has a chilling effect on people’s ability to speak and to think freely,” he said. “That’s the point. It’s totalitarian in its intent. We should fight it.” “Our public conversation has been hijacked by extremists like this,” Carlson added. Follow Jeff Poor on Twitter @jeff_poor (More)
